Rousing welcome for Chinthaka

by Kandy Sports Corr.

Sri Lanka's gold medal winner in weight lifting at the Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, Australia last month, Chintaka Withanage, will be given a rousing welcome by the Kandy Young Mens Christian Association on - Saturday.

From the Kandy YMCA he will be taken in a motorcade through the streets of Kandy to the Bogambara Stadium where the centenary celebrations of this organisation is scheduled to commence.

It must be recalled that Chintaka Withanage was initially coached by Sports Officer, Kumudu Kumara Silva of Polonnaruwa. But during the last seven months he had to train under the watchful eyes of former national coach Athula Wijewickrema at the Kandy YMCA. It was here that he had to hone up his skills.

The sports fans in the hill capital are eagerly looking forward to the arrival of this weight lifting prodigy from Polonnaruwa to give him a hero's welcome for the honour he brought to the motherland.
