Lankan company to direct Indian commercials

by L. S. A. Wedaarachchi

Sinhala and Tamil dubbed Indian Tele-dramas have been highly popularised among local TV viewers during the last few years. Some TV channels and multi-national companies got down leading teledrama directors and TV artistes from India for their TV productions as well as for TV commercials.

One can easily identify the influence of local dramas and films on local teledramas at the early stage and the Indian influence in the recent past.

Even at present serialising two Indian tele productions by two private TV channels have captured the local audience, incidentally enjoying the highest position of the viewer ratings. In the meantime a leading and highly accepted Sri Lankan advertising personality has been invited by an Indian company to direct their commercials. He is the CEO and the conceptualist of A. M. Kreations, Athula Mahawalage.

The 'Nestomalt' campaign which is considered one of the most successful brand campaigns launched for Nestle Lanka Ltd was created and directed by him. It commenced in 2003 and it is being continued even at present as an evolving TV commercial with Chaturika Peiris, a popular young actress in the local cinema.

Describing how he got his new assignment for an Indian leading company - Jain Grantiles, Mahawalage said, last February when he was in the Prasad Colour Laboratory in Chennai, transferring Nestle TV commercials from video format to film format, he was invited by Jain Grantiles Chairman Sunil Bafna who was inspired by Nestle TV commercials which were seen by him at the same studio.

Mahawalage who started his creative and advertising career from his school days, had contributed articles, cartoons photographs to film and art journals such as Kala, Sarasaviya, Sathsara Kumari, Mihira, Sathuta, Sarasi Published by leading publishing houses including the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited, Times and Sumathi Publishers.

He has worked for international Magazines representing Sri Lanka as a photographer. Asian Business in Asia of Hongkong, International Tax free trader of UK, Oil and Gas News of Singapore are some of those international magazines. He has been commended for his creations of logos and head pieces.

Among those the logos of leading Sinhala daily and weekly Sinhala Newspaper and a Sinhala radio station show his creativity.

A series of discussions were held between Jain Grantiles and A. M. Kreations to produce TV commercials on Jain Grantiles. Jain Grantiles have gained a prestigious name as an Indian product. Even in Sri Lanka a few leading financial organisations and a leading hospital - a BOI project have used Jain Grantiles for their constructions. Mahawalage is due to leave for India next month to take up his new offer to produce commercials for Jain Grantiles.

Multi-million brand campaigns in Sri Lanka for multi-national companies and leading local companies were conducted by A. M. Kreations. The campaign includes Arpico PVC Pipes, plastic chairs, water tanks and Arpico supercentres, Magi, Kitkat, Nescafe and Nestomalt.

Being a Sri Lankan based advertising and media production company A. M. Kreations has taken a further step to explore the new markets of India and Singapore.
