Manatunga, Rajakaruna for World Cup

by Lal Gunesekera

Two of the country's experienced wheelchair tennis players, Manatunga and Rajakaruna, both of the Sri Lanka Army, will represent their country at the Invacare World Team Tennis Cup in Brazil from May 1 to 7 organised by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Sri Lanka are competing in this event for the third consecutive year and will be featured in World Group II and 32 countries are being represented in Brazil.

Ranked No. 1 and No. 2, Manatunga and Rajakaruna, are very experienced players with the former playing in several overseas tournaments including the Australian, Dutch and Belgium Open, while the latter has competed in previous World Cup tournaments and fared well at the Malaysian Open in 2005.

Major Shiran Abeysekera, himself a wheelchair tennis player, accompanies the two players as manager-cum-coach. They are being sponsored by South Asian Gateway Terminals (SAGT). Sri Lanka beat Denmark and Finland at last year's World Cup though losing to Israel on a tie breaker and secured 26th position in the world rankings.
