Schools' Swimming - trial for Asian Schools meet by Leslie Fernando Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association (SLSASA) has finalised arrangements to hold the four-day 33rd Sri Lanka Schools Swimming and Diving Championships from May 4 to 7 at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool. The meet is approved by the Ministry of Education. According to Mrs. Ranjani de Fonseka, Secretary, SLSASA, the meet will be a selection trial to pick swimmers for the 2nd Asian Schools Swimming Championships to be held from July 26 to August 01 in Hong Kong. Mrs. Fonseka added that the entries closed on April 7 and a record number of 1,432 swimmers and 64 divers will be seen in action at the championships. Altogether 152 swimming events will be worked off in six age categories under-9, under-11, under-13, under-15, under-17 and under-19. The overall boys and girls champions will be selected. In addition, the best swimmers in all age groups (boys and girls) will be picked and special prizes will be presented. The points for swimming will be awarded as follows-Individual Events - 10 (first place) 7 (second), 5 (third), 3 (fourth), 2 (fifth) and 1 (sixth). Relays - 15 (first), 10 (second), 6 (third), 4 (fourth), 3 (fifth) and 2 (sixth). The diving events-spring board and platform will be held for boys and girls under-11, under-13, under-15, under-17 and under-19. The points will be awarded for the first three places - 7 points (first), 5 (second) and 3 (third). The overall boys and girls champions will be selected while the best diver boys and girls will also be selected and prizes will be awarded. The opening ceremony will take place on May 4 at 8.00 a.m. and the swimming events will start from 8.45 a.m. on May 5, 6, 7. The swimming and diving events will commence from 8.00 a.m. The closing ceremony and distribution of awards will be from 3.30 p.m. on May 7. Special awards will be presented to schoolboy and schoolgirl swimmers and
divers who participated at the Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne,
Australia recently. |
