Politics unpacked Ambassador, elite? When you are ambassador in one of the best of stations, and on duty, you should be in a position to please almost everybody, and not just those you might be more identified with. One of them may have fallen somewhat out of favour recently, but if he did, there was much speculation as to why. Some said he was after all of the same stock as the, um, well, Colombo elite. In the final analysis he was a batchmate of a lady who was very close to the big chief of the opposition. Some say almost married him. That we don't know, but her student married him. Have that kind of affiliation, and what can't people tell - no? Wimal, Kehel
Wimal Weerawnasa, member of parliament, being fully aware that Keheliya Rambukwella had almost diametrically opposed views to his in the not so recent past, still wanted to say that Rambukwella always had his heart in his right place. So he said "though he never said it in public, he always said in the parliament canteen when he met us, that he was on our side." Phew! How lovely if he had those tea and cake sessions recorded on videotape? Vasu and the cocktail circuit
Vasudeva Nanyakkara was to meet the press, at a cocktail. In a jiffy, the press-do was called off. Some say, bomb blast did it. But, the rank naughty say that a lady friend of the Mayor hopeful wanted it called off. She thinks the press is all nasty, like fried pineapple gone bad or something unimaginable like that. With her kind of jargon we can never know - but the press, true, had been having some fun at her expense, for all good reason. Pity anyway, that cocktail. Laughter, best medicine
No harm eking out some humour out of a grim situation. Call it black humour if you will - but at end of week speculation was that the next round of talks would be on, after a week of horrendous hostilities. A suicide bomb blast and a series of air strikes in self defence, all of this hit the headlines. But, at week's end, the news was that, maybe, just maybe, everybody might sit down and talk again. This was at least not to escape the attention of at least one imp at the bar. Said he: "what is this men - a lover's quarrel?" The eyes and ears
Rags upon rags claimed last week that Mangala Samaraweera had imparted a lesson on protocol to his superior. Not to be outdone by these much exaggerated reports, the President said, first thing when he met the press last week "meya mata advice karanawane." He had a especially sweet smile for Mangla, having said that. He had to return him the favour, Mangla had fed him cake the other day at his b' day bash. It's called confidence
Elections are far behind him now, and that makes the President want to talk to the press on the current issues, the situation in the North and East being one of them. But, Rajapakse had a few asides on the subject of elections also. He looked at some pressmen with a sideward glance and said 'ogollo kivuwanne mama paradinava kiyala. Mama digatama kiyuva mama dinanava kiyala." (So, you people said I will lose, but I won the presidential election.") Then he added this sentence, which a lot of us might really want to remember. He said: 'I'm saying it with the same sense of conviction - I know I'm going to solve this problem also.'' Well if he has the same luck on this score as well, who knows? |
