Top junior players in international tourneys by Lal Gunesekera Some of the country's top junior tennis players have been selected to represent the country at three international tournaments in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia next month (May). A four-member team comprising three players and an official leaves for Kuala Lumpur today (Sunday) to participate in the Junior (under-16) Davis Cup, while three players and two officials leave on May 6 for the Junior (under-16) Federation Cup in Thailand. Then an eight-member team (three boys, three girls and two officials) leave for Indonesia on May 13 for the World Junior Championships. Sri Lanka will be represented at the Junior Davis Cup to be staged in Malaysia from May 1 to 8 by Michael Siyaguna, Arthur Hewakotage and Dinesh Khanthan with Ganendran Subramaniam as non-playing captain cum coach. Twenty-two countries are competing. For the Junior Federation Cup to be staged in Thailand from May 7 to 14, Sri Lanka will be represented by Nilupul Gunasekera, Jithmi Jayawickreme and Amritha Muttiah with D. Pathirajah as coach and Mrs. Kondegama as the chaperone. Nineteen countries are participating. Indika Wettasinghe, Shehan Gomez and Aravind Fernando will be the three
boys at the World Juniors in Indonesia from May 14 to 21, while the three
girls are Amritha Muttiah, Shenali Weerasekera and Shenelle Abeysekera with
former veteran Davis Cup player and national champion Jayendra Wijesekera as
the non-playing captain of the boys' team and Mahesha Seneviratne the
non-playing captain of the girls' side. |
