Six rowers from Madras at Joes Sculling Regatta

Six young rowers, three boys and three girls representing Madras Boat Club will participate at the fourth Joes Sculling Regatta conducted and hosted by St. Joseph's College to be held from May 24 to 27 on the Beira Waters.

Yohan Thurainayagam said that it will add more colour to the regatta with the participation of six schoolboys and girls rowers from, Chennai.

The Lankan authorities have already sent the invitation and the Indian authorities have accepted it and will compete. The three girls will row in four events in the under-13, under-15 and under-19 age groups while the three boys will participate in five events in the under-15 and under-19 age category.

M. R. Ravindra a very popular figure amongst the local rowers who has represented Madras Boat Club with distinction will accompany the rowers as manager-cum coach.

Rowers from Royal College, S. Thomas' College, Ananda College, St. Joseph's College, Ladies College, Musaeus College, University of Moratuwa, University of Colombo, Navy, Air Force, Old Joes and Colombo Rowing Club will participate at the regatta.

The events to be held are: Boys and girls under-13-sculls (500 meters), under-15 sculls (1000 meters), under-17 and under-19 sculls and double sculls, pair and fours (1000 meters). Oarsmen and Oarswomen under-24 and open sculls, double sculls, pair and fours. All events will be rowed in the fibre-glass sculling boats. The respective institutions are expected to make their own arrangements for boats for training and competition purposes.

The heats of all events will be worked off on May 24, 25, 26 commencing at 2.00 p.m. on each day. The finals will be on May 27 starting form 1.00 p.m.
