THE LAST FEW PIECES OF APRIL:

An interesting album

Anil Balasuriya will be launching his debut solo album " The Last Few Pieces of April" at ONYX - Taj Samudra on August 05. We caught up with Anil for more on the launch.

1. Is this your first attempt at going it alone? What pushed you to

do a solo album? Yes, it's my first time. It wasn't something I planned. A couple of years ago Indie Square took a break cause most of the members were heading overseas for a while, I was working on a couple of songs at the time, so it just seemed like the perfect thing to do at the time.

2. What's on your stereo these days? Were there any particular artistes that influenced the songwriting on 'the last few pieces of April'?

Well nothing really inspired me to go out and get an album for a while, there was nothing relatively new. On my stereo hmm I think "O" by Damien Rice by Kings of Convenience. As far as influences go ... I was listening to a lot of Counting Crows, Cold play, Bloc Party & Damien Rice .. so I guess if any it's a mix of them.

3. How long did it take you to put the whole thing together?

Close upon two years.

4. That's quite a strange title... what does it mean?

Is April a person or are you referring to the month? Ya I get that a lot. It could be either. I don't know I get these titles going round in my head and this was one of them. It was gonna be this or two days in October.

5. What's with the months?

Don't really know but I seem to be acquiring them quite a bit of late.

6. Did you write and compose most of the songs?

I actually wrote and composed all the songs in the album, it's taken a while but I think it's been worth it.

7. Have you any more plans for solo projects? Will the band ever re-form?

Well I'll just see how it goes, I mean this has been a great experience and I can't say I wouldn't want to do it again. But yes the band will definitely be back.

8. Are you looking forward to promoting the album (as in playing gigs, etc.)

That's the best part. It's great making records but playing live is really the best thing about this for me. After the launch in Colombo we've already made plans to take the album to Kandy and the South.

9. The cover art is interesting. Who is it?

Hmm I wish I knew. It's actually a painting that was done by my buddy Nafeez. She's in the UK now but gave me this before she left and I just thought it fitted the mood of the record.

The official Magazine is the Leisure Times. Official Venue Is the ONYX at Taj Samudra. Official Radio Station is 101.7 TNL.
