Dedunupitiya Maha Vidyalaya, a school listed below the poverty line
by food insecurity survey carried out by the World Food Programme (WFP),
organised a surprise event to Aitken Spence Cargo to appreciate their
efforts to uplift the conditions of the school.
The school, belonging to the Galagedara education zone is one of the
most remote in the Kandy district lacking many facilities.
On May 27, the staff of Aitken Spence Cargo participated in a
shramadana project at Dedunupitiya Maha Vidyalaya. The school buildings
which were badly in need of fresh paint were colourwashed and a new
nameboard was installed. In addition, a boundary fence was put up and a
much needed computer was donated for the school. A pipeline was also
installed to provide fresh water for the students and the staff.
During the recent visit, discussions were held between the education
authorities and Aitken Spence officials to look into the future
development programs in the school.
Aitken Spence Cargo plans to provide the mid-day meal with WFP's
assistance and to offer scholarships to the deserving students that will
include a trainee period at Aitken Spence Cargo. In addition, plans are
under way to assist the community by way of setting up cottage
industries whereby the sale of products will be facilitated by the
company. |
