IDP’s in en masse have arrived in Valachchenai fleeing Tiger controlled Vakarai, where they complained that they were held against their will.

According to returnees, there were 25,000 - 30,000 refugees in the Tiger controlled areas living under extreme conditions, Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said. Aid agencies have raised concern over the shortage of food and medical supplies in the Vakarai area.

However, security forces said all supplies other than building materials which could be used to build bunkers are allowed to uncleared areas in the East. Brigadier Samarasinghe said war displaced would be resettled in Sampur after land mine clearance.
