Astron in laudable CSR project
The built environment at the Mount Lavinia main post office, modified
to welcome all people with dignity, was re-opened last week. The
visionary thinking of Ms. Marise Deckker, the Chairperson of Astron
Limited Ratmalana to fund this project to increase accessibility and
usability of facilities for people, is highly commendable.
Dr. Ajith C. S. Perera who initiated this program said: "Astron
Limited for over fifty years has contributed with dedicated commitment
towards the well-being of Sri Lankans by providing a high quality cost
effective range of pharmaceuticals and nutritional healthcare products.
He thanked Chief Post Master, Mt. Lavinia M. Somasunderam for his
support and added: "2007 has been declared by the government as 'Year of
Accessibility' to public buildings and places.
The post office, like the market and the shop, is an essential place
for the young and the old in their day-to-day life. It should be the
moral duty of the Postal Department to make on a priority basis, their
built environments accommodate all people equally, for the purpose which
the post office building and its facilities were designed and meant to
be used".
Ms. Marise Deckker said that this is a token of appreciation to the
service the Mount Lavinia Post Office has rendered to them over the
years.
Deputy Post Master General Kingsley Wimalaratne thanked Astron
Limited for bearing all expenditure and 'Idiriya', a not-for-profit
humanitarian service organisation for their initiative towards
empowering the users of facilities afforded at the Mt. Lavinia Post
Office.
He said that it was a fine example by Dr. Perera to prove to the
world that, although he is now a wheelchair user, like many others, has
a wealth of untapped potential, diverse ability and enhanced
productivity, that the country cannot afford to let go waste.
