Trinco and Jaffna students to sit GCE (O/L) exam

The Examinations Department is likely to conduct the GCE (O/L) examination by the third week of February for the students in Trincomalee and Jaffna districts who could not sit the examination held last December due to unavoidable circumstances Commissioner General of the Department Anura Edirisinghe said.

The islandwide annual GCE (O/L) examinations are generally held in December. However, students in Kantale, Somapura and Somadevi in the Trincomalee district were unable to sit the examination last year due to the escalating violence in those areas. A number of students in Jaffna was reported to have been unable to sit the examination because of the fast-spreading Chikungunya virus flu.

Edirisinghe said he was yet to finalise the decision as he was awaiting information from the educational authorities in these areas. "We are prepared to conduct the examination as scheduled. The question papers are ready. However, we are not aware of the ground situation. The final decision depends on that", he said.

"We might have to put off the examination if the prevailing situation was not conducive".

According to the Commissioner General, students who were affected by Chikungunya were required to submit a valid medical certificate and a letter from the school principal.
