Rantambe power plant resumes operations
The Rantambe power plant is now generating power as usual. Ministry
of Power and Energy sources said, the power plant was affected due to
the recent landslides and heavy rains in the Nuwara Eliya-district.
Due to this the power plant generated 49 MW power using only two
turbines.
After clearing the soil around the power plant, they are now in a
position to use another two turbines. The sources said the cause was the
indiscriminate clearing of tea lands and removal of rocks by people. The
coral under the soil is reported to be very slippery and when it rains
the soil gets washed away.
Meanwhile, the Korean Government has pledged to develop the wind
power plant investing nearly US $, 500 million to generate 1,200 MW in
Sri Lanka.
At present they are targeting to develop the Puttalam or Hambantota
districts. The sources said they could create around 1,000 job
opportunities as a result.
