Women graduates as ASPs soon
Women graduates will be recruited for the first time to fill
vacancies for Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) to perform
various police functions hitherto performed by male officers, a
spokesman for the National Police Commission told the "Sunday Observer."
A competitive examination to recruit 17 Assistant Superintendents of
Police (ASPs) will be held for males and females shortly. The
examination to recruit ASPs directly will be held after a lapse of seven
years.
Although women were recruited to fill other ranks such as constables
and sub-inspectors no women gazetted officers were recruited in the
past. However, with the expansion of the police the need to recruit
women ASP's arose to man specialised branches such as the Women and
Child Protection Bureau.
Meanwhile, the National Police Commission (NPC) has called for
applications from Senior Supdt.of Police (SSP) to be promoted to the
rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).
Three DIG vacancies exist at present and retired SSPs too would be
eligible to go before a board although they will not be re-employed.
