The International Award Association is a balanced programme of
volunteering self development. This Association together with the
Ministry of Youth Affairs and National Youth Award Authority (NYA) is
planning to pay tribute to His Excellency President Mahindha Rajapaksa
for his dedicate service for the youth by awarding the Golden Global
Bird Award.
"Pioneer Youth Leaders" is one successful project which was led by
President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The main objective in this project was to
train the village youth, Gramasewa division wise, through different
aspects to become "Pioneer leaders" in our country.
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh is the founder of the International Award
Association and this programme commenced in Britain in 1956. Today over
115 countries run the award under number of different titles. The
ultimate aim is to motivate boys and girls between 14 to 25 and to take
them through the potentially difficult period between adolescence and
adulthood. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme was launched by the
National Services council as a pilot project.

In the year 1980, 300 participants representing NYSC, Youth Clubs,
Girl Guides Association, YMCA and schools were the first set to get
registered. The preserve of the NYA is to give the experience for young
people by assuring appropriate standards of awards management.
There are 3 levels of the award namely Bronze, Silver and Gold, with
each successive level demanding increases. These 3 levels also breaks
into 5 sections as service, adventurous journey, skills, physical
recreation and residential project.
The Chairman of NYC Saman Amarasinghe told Sunday Observer that the
association broke traditions by starting a award which gives a chance to
build the nation. He also said first time in its history the association
produced a hand book in tamil and a hand book in braille language which
is for visually impaired. The books will be produced on August 12 on the
International day for youth declared by the United Nations.
Chairman also said, projects like Youwun Thilina official magazine,
Youth World Record book and Triple D'project were initiated provincial
wise with the advice of the Minister Pavithra Wanniarachi.
Chairman finally said that, NYC is walking through a path where the
youth will be heading towards success.
