Union Assurance recognized for supporting cricket
CRICKET: Union Assurance PLC was recognized at the recently held
'Cricket Legends' felicitation ceremony which was organized to recognize
cricketing legends and leading mercantile firms that have supported the
sport in many ways by proving sponsorships to the cricket board and by
employing cricketers.
Union Assurance was recognised at this event for the contribution
made in the 90's era. Many of the Sri Lankan World Cup winning
cricketers were employed with Union Assurance including Arjuna
Ranathunga, Muttiah Muralitharan, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Upul Chandana
and Sanath Jayasooriya.
Many other past cricketers were also employed with Union Assurance:
Saliya Ahangama, Uvais Karnain, Adel Hassim, Nishantha Ranatunga, Graeme
Labrooy, Roshan Mahanama, Sanjeeva Ranatunga, Rodger Wejesuriya, Duleep
Samaraweera, Dinuk Hettiarachchi and Jeewaka Weerasinghe are a few of
them.
Eric Upashantha, former Sri Lankan fast bowler is an employee of
Union Assurance said Mr. Ivan Nicholas - Assistant General Manager,
Corporate Business Development.
The year 2005 was a landmark year for Sri Lankan Cricket, as Sri
Lanka played West Indies, marking the 150th test match played by Sri
Lanka. Union Assurance came forward to sponsor this landmark event by
being the title sponsor, stated Mr. Nicholas. He further added that
Union Assurance have sponsored Mercantile 'A' division cricket for more
than ten years in the past.
