Exhilarating blues
by Mahes Perera
Watch him performing on stage and you are compelled to think where
does he get his energy from? But then all strong blues
guitarists/vocalists are power driven.
And so too Glen Terry who has released another CD 'The Glen Terry
Project' containing tracks from his live performance at the Music
Industry Centre. There are nine tracks on the CD and Glen is supported
by Dino Martinello - tenor sax, Troy Hambly - hammond organ, Lawrence
Gambale bass and Ben Brathwaite - drums.
The CD quite naturally contains blues, the opening track Red Baron an
exhilarating one played with exchanges between guitar and sax which is
attractive. The other tracks Dad Dad Dad reveals the thinking of a young
son - the lyrics so typical of Glen Terry and sung in that captivating
voice of his.
Blues lovers will enjoy All I Need Is You, Help Me, Small Town Baby,
Trouble in Mind and the well-known Cyclonic Woman. The celebrated When
the Saints is given a new dressing while Aieyo rounds off the
performance with an infectious salsa fusion beat with lyrics that are
worth paying attention to.
Speaking with Glen was exhilarating. He recounted his musical events
where he performed at many Blues Festivals and enjoyed himself playing
along with other Australian musicians. Of course Sri Lanka holds a
special place in his heart which will draw him back again to our shores
soon.
There's something in his guitar artistry that makes you stop and
listen. His guitar sound, the creative riffs his movements on stage
while playing, his instant creativity as the melody runs on, endorses
the fact that he is a classy entertainer - knows how to keep the
audience with him applauding for more.
So his new CD the Glen Terry Project is an ideal reminder and an
appreciation of his blues artistry that comes so easily to him.
Rich guitar expressions

Dylan and Bubu.
|
One of Sri Lanka's leading guitarists and vocalists is scheduled to
be in town next week to make many appearances with our musicians. He is
none other than Dylan Lye one time leading light with the Jetliners led
by the living legend Mignonne Fernando.
Dylan who will be flying down from Hong Kong along with
drummer/percussionist Bubu Wijesinghe are regulars with the band Taurus
in Hong Kong. Dylan finds freelance work with other bands inspiring and
is popular choice in the music scene over there. A session musician for
recordings as well Dylan hopes to put on tracks more of his music
including compositions of his own.
With a repetoire that stretches from pop to rock to jazz to Latin,
Dylan is a role model to the young musicians especially the guitarists
who aspire to become professionals. He has always stressed the
importance of rehearsing for long hours and for listening to music with
a critical ear.
Improvisation is a creative art and Dylan's synonymous vocalise while
improvising on the guitar is a joy to listen to. We hope Dylan will be
with us for a long period so that many young guitarists could learn from
his valuable experience.
Verse - a new wave in entertainment

Louise Dean |
Sophie Hannah |
Susan Elderkin |
An interesting evening of entertainment was organised by the British
Council in collaboration with Hilton Residence when young writers
narrated new works of theirs. Sophie Hannah effectively read her poem
'Don't Say I Said It' and an extract from Hurting Distance.
Louise Dean contributed with an extract from Becoming Strangers and
The Idea of Love while Susan Elderkin narrated her short prose Sunset
over Chocolate Mountains and The Voices.
Sandwiched with soft music and a spread of crackers and wine, this
was a new way of entertainment for those who want to get away from loud
music and fizz. |
