Thuhashini - 'Player of the Year' for 7th year in Arizona

GOLF: Sri Lanka's top amateur women's golfer, Thuhashini
Selvaratnam, is doing her country proud in the State of Arizona, United
States of America (USA) where she was named "Player of the Year" by AWGA
for the seventh consecutive year - a fete no other player in the State
has achieved.

She earned a total of 1500 points through participating in qualifying
events last year (2007) and surpassed her closest competitor by 500
points.
Her skill on the course has made her a contender in every event she
plays and her reign in the annals of Arizona Golf is still running
strong. Last year (2007) was yet another exceptional year for Thuhashini.
Her accomplishments include first in Individual Stroke-Play in the USGA
Women's State Team Championship with an outstanding 1 under for 3 rounds
of play - first time a Sri Lankan has won an USGA title.
Thuhashini also won the AWGA State Four-Ball Stroke-Play
Championship, AWGA Scotch Play Championship, runner-up in the AWGA State
Match-Play Championship and runner-up in the AWGA State Stroke-Play
Championship.
She has been consistent and plays with a purpose and positive
outlook, and as Assistant Development Director and Assistant Golf Coach
of Xavier College Preparatory, has won several State Championships under
her direction. Cheynne Woods, who is the niece of the great Tiger Woods,
who attends Xavier looks to Thuhashini as her mentor and says that with
the Sri Lankan as her coach for two years, she (Cheynne) has learned a
lot and learned that if she works hard and keeps her goals in mind and
can succeed in her studies and Golf. Before leaving for USA, Thuhashini,
won seven national titles in the 1999-2000 season.
They were the Sri Lanka Women's Amateur Championships for the third
time. Singapore Open Amateur Championship, Hong Kong Open Amateur
Championships, China Open Amateur Championship, Thailand Open Amateur
Championship, All-India Open Amateur Championship and Emirates Open
Amateur Championship. She Championship and won the Epson Sourjana Open
too in Malaysia. |
