Sampath Bank win three trophies
CHESS: Sampath Bank won three trophies at the Mercantile Chess
Championships - Rapid Chess, Mercantile "A" division Champs and
Mercantile "B" division champs.
In the Rapid Championship, the first runner-up was Aviva Global
Services Lanka Chess Club and the second runner-up was SriLankan
Airlines.
The Mercantile Open Team Championships had SriLankan Airlines as
first runners-up in "A" division and Aviva Global Service were the
second runners-up. In the "B" division, the first runners-up were
Sampath Bank "B" team and the second runners-up were Seylan Merchant
Bank Limited.

KSC to re-lay grounds for next season

RUGBY: The Management Committee of the Kandy Sports Club (KSC) has
taken steps to re-construct the Nittawela Rugby Grounds and they have
already commenced the work by digging and making the necessary
preparations to plant new grass. A spokesman of the Kandy Sports Club
told the 'Sunday Observer' that the rugby ground will be ready by the
end of March, 2008 for the next rugby season.
Kandy sports club will spend Rs. 3 million on this project and the
rugby players of the club and the fans of the hill capital will be
delighted over this venture.
All Island Masters Games April 5 and 6

ATHLETICS: Kandy District Masters Athletic Association will conduct
the All-Island Masters Games this year on April 5 and 6 at the Bogambara
Stadium, Kandy. The relevant age groups: Over 35 years men and women, 40
to 45 years men and women, 50 to 55 years for men and women, 60 plus for
women and 70 plus for men. The following are the events for all age
groups: Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Putt, Throwing the
Discus, Throwing the Javelin, and the track events: 100, 200, 400, 800,
1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 metres and the 5 km walk. The meet will serve as
a trial for the forthcoming World Masters Games.
Maroon sixes 2008 Feb 17
CRICKET: Maroon sixes 2008, the annual sports event organised by Old
Anandians 96 group will be held on 17th February 2008 at the Race course
ground Colombo 07. This event goes on to sponsor the college's
volleyball team and upgrade the friendship of all old boys' groups.
Every Old Anandian can join Maroons sixes 2008. For further details

ETI enter "Quarters"
CRICKET: A splendid 90 by Mahesh Rajaratne and an equally good
bowling performance by Gayan Malinga (4 for 42) saw Edirisinghe Trust
Investments (ETI) enter the quarter-finals of the Mercantile 'C'
Division cricket tournament beating Confifi Group by 150 runs at the
D.S. Senanayake College grounds. ETI made 308 for 5 in their 50 overs,
while Confifi were bundled out for 158 in 23 overs.
ETI: 308 for 5 in 50 overs (Mahesh Rajaratne 90, Gayan Malinga 57,
Eranga Gangoda 58, Roshan Laksiri not out 42). Confifi Group: 158 in 23
overs (Suranga Kahingala 50, Gayan Malinga 4 for 42, Manjula Liyanage 3
for 44, Yasath de Silva 2 for 36).

CFL tourney starts today
SOCCER: Ten leading soccer clubs will dribble at the City Football
League (CFL) conducted Division one inter-club league football
tournament commencing from today February 10 at the Cooray Playground,
Wellawatta. The opening match will be between Ratnam SC and Soccer Fans
SC and the matches will be continued till March 9.
The teams in the fray are Maligawatta Youth SC, New Star Sc, Cooray
SC, Java Lane Sc, Ratnam Sc, Soccer Fans Sc, Young Silver Sc, Old Bens
Sc Renown SC, and Promoters SC.
