Kekulu and Nadu rice more popular -Survey

Most people prefer Kakulu and Nadu rice while less than one-fifth of the population prefer Samba rice according to a recent survey by the Department of Censes and Statistics.

The household survey revealed that main three sectors of the society urban, rural and Estate sectors consume more Kakulu and Nadu rice than Samba rice.

According to market sources the wholesale price of a Kilogramme of samba dropped to Rs. 60 last week.

Leading rice millers released stocks to the market last week and the wholesale price of samba dropped to Rs. 60 per kilogramme said a leading rice dealer at the Pettah market.

Secretary, Trade, marketing Development Cooperatives and Consumer services Dr. R. M. K. Ratnayake said that the drop in the wholesale price was due to the Government stipulating the price on rice. The Food Department also purchased red Kakulu and white Kakulu at Rs. 52 per kilo from the Mannar and Vavuniya district last week, he said.
