The Government Analyst was due to visit the Ampara town following the
bomb blast that ripped through a city hotel around 5.40 p.m. on Friday
killing nine persons and critically injuring more than 30 persons who
were rushed to the Ampara hospital, police sources told the Sunday
Observer.
Police spokesman, Senior DIG A. Illangakoon said that several police
teams have been detailed to investigate the bomb blast and are working
on the case. He also said that several mortars had been fired by the
LTTE in the Pannalagama area where four civilians sustained injuries.
The Special Task Force has been deployed to quell the situation.
Police said that a customer who visited the hotel on Friday evening
probably had left a parcel that contained the bomb when the hotel was
crowded with office workers.
They suspect it to be the work of LTTE cadres to disrupt the election
in the Eastern province. The hotel was severely damaged following the
bomb blast.
The hotel was a popular spot among Service and police personnel who
usually frequent the place in the evenings. |
