Chamila leads Sri Lanka Youth

NETBALL: Chamila Jayawardena of MAS Holdings will lead the twelve member Sri Lanka Youth Netball team to participate at the International Netball Championships to be played from May 24 to 30 in Adelaide, Australia.

According to Rio Ramlan, Secretary, Netball Federation of Sri Lanka the netballers were selected after several trials held in Colombo and the outstation. Most of the netballers who has been picked to represent the country has fared prominently in All-Island Schools tournaments and the Netball Federation conducted tourneys.

All netball playing countries will compete at this championship which will be played on a league basis from the preliminary rounds. The winners and runner up in the respective groups will play on criss-cross style until the champions and runners-up are found. The Ministry of Sports have approved the players and the officials for the tour.

The team will leave on May 21.

The squad: Chamila Jayawardena (MAS Holdings), Akila Jayawardena (Finance & Guarantee Co. Ltd.), Semini Alwis and Nelumi Gunasekera (both of Ladies College), Solange Gunawijaya and Sanjeewani Madushika (St. Josep’s Girls School, Negegoda), Hansi Bandara, Samurdhi Abeygunawardena (Kalutara BV), Mareesha Fernando (Holy Family Convent, Wennappuwa, Ishara Harshani (Seylan Bank), Maheshi Liyanage, Surani Silva (Newstead Girls School, Negombo).

Standbys: Thanuru Amerasinghe (Newstead), Wasundara Pathirage (F & G Co. Ltd), Anushka Nirmali (St. Joseph’s Girls School). Ms. Shanthi Unantenne (Manager), Ms. Thilaka Jinadasa (coach), Deepthi Alwis (Asst. coach). (L.F.)
