UPFA nominations for PC polls on Tuesday

UPFA nominations for the forthcoming elections to the North Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces will be finalised on Tuesday.

The SLFP has completed its list of candidates, but the UPFA would finalise the lists in consultation with the LSSP, CP, MEP and other coalition parties on Tuesday, said General Secretary UPFA Susil Premajayantha. He said the UPFA nominations would be signed on Tuesday.

The nominations for the forthcoming PC polls commenced last Friday. Nominations will be received upto July 4.

The PC polls will be held for the fifth time to elect 33 Councillors and 44 Councillors including those for the bonus seats for the NCPC and Sabaragamuwa PC respectively.

Meanwhile the UNP's nomination list for the forthcoming North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council elections will be announced following the party's Working Committee meeting scheduled to be held in Colombo on Tuesday (July 1).

The names of two Chief Ministerial candidates will also be released on this day.

The UNP last Sunday decided to go into an alliance with the Western People's Front (WPF), the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and the SLFP (M) to contest at the two Provincial Councils. Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe chaired the conference.

UNP, General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told the Sunday Observer that important decisions including probable candidates and the Chief Ministers have already been discussed with the UNP leader and the members of the special committee, appointed recently to carry out party policies.

Meanwhile, a senior UNP official said although the UNP Working Committee has so far received 15 applications for the two Chief Ministerial candidates, the names of former Major in the Sri Lanka Army, Janaka Perera and popular film actor, Ranjan Ramanayake are the first on the lists.

Formerly appointed Chief Ministerial candidate, Upul Shantha Sannasgala last week withdrew as the chief ministerial candidate for Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council for personal reasons.Attanayaka also said that the date of the commencement of the election campaign will be announced within the next few days.
