A new digital system for money orders to prevent frauds will be
introduced shortly, said Posts and Telecommunication Minister, Mahinda
Wijesekera.
He said that officers who were involved in multi-million rupee money
order frauds will be severely dealt with after the investigation.
Post offices will have facilities to check the genuineness of money
orders under the new system, he said. He said that the structure of the
Postal Department should be changed to suit the present day needs.
The postal service is a highly competitive commercial venture and it
cannot be run as a viable venture under the 19th and 20th century
finance and administrative regulations introduced by the British, he
said.
He said that he is not proposing to privatise the Postal Department
but has proposed to restructure the Postal Department as an authority
controlled by the government. He said that a 19,000 - strong postal
workforce will agree to a change that will wipeout its annual loss of
over Rs. 6,650 million as early as possible. |
