Defending Caltex Clifford Cup champions Kandy Sports Club put
themselves in line for the rugby triple when they Massacred a hapless
Galle Rugby and Football Club by 114 points (12 goals, 6 tries) to nil
to enter the semi-finals in their quarter final tie of the Clifford Cup
knock out rugby tournament match played at Nittawela Stadium in Kandy
yesterday. At half time Kandy SC led 59-0.
This was highest total at Nittawela this season and almost bettered
their season's highest against old Zahirians in a league match earlier
this season.
Kandy was at full strength but they did not at full pace giving the
ruggerites the much needed match practice after three weeks lay off. If
Kandy wanted they could have easily totted up another 50 points as more
but they did not exert themselves thus ensuring they did not injure
themselves before the all important semi final match against winners of
police - CH and FC match next Sunday.
Winger Sanjeewa Jayasinghe led the try spree touching down six times,
most of being under the post and took the try conversion himself in
sevens style.
The other try scorers were centre Pradeep Liyanage (2), full back
Dhanushka Pushpakumara (2) lock Sean Wanigasekera (1), flanker Sean
Wijesinghe (2), full back Radhika Hettiarachchi (1), Centre Gayan
Weeraratne (1), fly half Fazil Marija (1), No. 8 Imran Bisthamin (1),
lock Sumedha Jayasinghe (1)Adding the extra point were winger Sanjeewa
Jayasinghe (3), full back Radhika Hettiarachchi (3) and scrum half
Saliya Kumara (6).
