The Sri Lanka Telecom Group is offering a truly ubiquitous experience across all emerging media such as internet, IPTV and Mobile TV with the issue of the Mobile Television licence to the National Mobile Service Provider Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel by the Ministry of Mass Media and Information.

With this licence, Mobitel SLT’s fully owned subsidiary would be permitted country-wide transmission of local and international television content to its subscribers over its cutting edge Super 3.5G HSPA network.

Minister of Mass Media and Information Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said, “We are confident that Mobile TV will be an exciting service for consumers and generate new opportunities for innovation and growth in the mobile industry and would also boost the evolution of the media industry itself.

Chairperson, Sri Lanka Telecom and Mobitel Mrs. Leisha De Silva Chandrasena commended the Ministry of Mass Media and Information for its far-sightedness in regulating the mobile television licensing and for the encouragement extended to the group’s attempt in enhancing its total customer experience through the convergence of internet, Mobile and IPTV media.

‘This service would enable all our mobile subscribers to tune into their favourite TV programs on their mobile phone from practically anywhere in the island.

For example, the Olympic Games could now be viewed by our mobile subscribers at a click of a button on their mobile phones’, she said.

Subscribers of Mobitel could access Mobile TV by making a video call to 555 or by logging on to its wap site; wap.mobitel.lk on their Mobitel phone.

While the former requires 3G handset compatibility the latter option is available for 3G and 2G handset users of the network.
