The protest campaign launched by the Unemployed Graduates’ Union to
urge the government to provide employment has drawn the attention of
Power and Energy Minister and former Deputy Education Minister W.D.J.
Seneviratne.
The Minister said at a time when the government has taken steps to
carry out large scale infrastructure development activities, especially
in villages with the objective of generating employment to all, it was
not ethical for a section of graduates to stage a protest campaign to
demand for jobs.
“As they are aware the government provided 40,000 jobs to graduates
few years ago and likewise we expect to create more jobs in the near
future,” he said.
Asked whether the statement made by graduates during their protest
campaign that a large number of vacancies still exist in the public
sector and that the government has not taken any action to fill them,
the Minister said that at present only few vacancies exist in the public
sector.
“According to the current trend, graduates too must acquire the
knowledge of computer literacy and English Language in addition to their
university education as it will help them to find jobs easily in the
future,” he added.
