Harshana Godamanne and Jithmie Jayawickrema win men’s and women’s titles

TENNIS: Harshana Godamanne and Jithmie Jayawickrema won the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively on the sixth day of the 93rd Laugfs National Tennis Championship at the SLTA Courts, Greenpath yesterday.

As expected, both won their matches quite easily. Godamanne defeated Rajive Rajapakse in straight sets 6/3,6/4,6/4 while Jithmie made s hort work of Nilupuli Goonesekera 6/3,6/1.

In the men’s doubles semi-finals, Harshana Godamanne and Rajive Rajapakse beat Zaw Zaw Laat and G.Subramanium 6/3,6/4. In the second semi-final, Rukmal Cooray and Sanka Athukorale beat the seasoned pair of Rohan de Silva and Jayendra Wijesekera 6/3,6/2.

The mixed doubles semi-finals will take place today (Sunday) when Rajive Rajapakse and Jithmie Jayawickrema will meet U.Narahenpitage and Harshana Godamanne and in second semi-final, D.Wijesuriya and N.Goonesekera will take on Kemali Herath and Rukmal Cooray. Both matches will commence at 9.00 am. In the over 35 men’s doubles scheduled for 8.30 a.m. Aruna Seneviratne and Chammika de Silva will meet G.Subramanium and R.Casiechetty. (RA)
