Mahamaya takes to cricket seriously
CRICKET: Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy is a school that is
fast catching up on the game of cricket and they were the only girls
school that participated in the 2006 Women's Cricket Association and
took the second runners-up position, behind Anuradhapura and Kegalle
Districts.
They couldn't participate in last year's tournament due to
unavoidable circumstances. Mahamaya started off by playing a softball
cricket and then graduated to leatherball cricket in the year 2000.
In the recent past Mahamaya had victories over St. Joseph's Balika,
Kegalle in the normal eleven-a-side game and also beat Pushpadana, Kandy
in the six-a-side game. This year, Mahamaya became runners-up in the
Ladies Cricket Tournament organised by the Kandy District Sports
Development Foundation, losing to the strong Kandy Ladies Team in the
final.
Mahamaya had their first cricket awards ceremony under the patronage
of their sports-loving principal Indrani Withanachchi recently. From
