Jiffrey to be felicitated today

SPORTS AWARD: Kandy Sports Club - the organisers of the Singer
SriLankan International Rugby Sevens will honour our Kandy Sports
Correspondent for Sunday Observer and Daily News S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen by
awarding him a trophy in recognition of his services for the promotion
of rugby.
The presentation will take place at Singer SriLankan Airlines
International Rugby Sevens at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium in Kandy today
(Sunday).
He has been writing for the Lake House Group for the past thirty
years, covering not only rugby, but all other sports played in the area.
He has also covered the Singer SriLankan Rugby Sevens since the very
inception in 1998 and has been doing so without a break. Apart from
this, he has also the unique record of covering every rugby match played
by Kandy Sports Club at Nittawela since 1978, underlying his love for
the game. Jiffrey Abdeen is a well-known personality in the field of
sports, not only in Kandy but in the entire upcountry area. He has
covered rugby, cricket and motor sports at club level and also other
sports like swimming athletics, hockey, soccer, boxing, badminton, table
tennis, basketball at school level.
In motor sports, he is a well known figure, covering motor racing
events such as Foxhill Supercross, Radella Hill Climb, Mahagastota Hill
Climb, Kotmale Hill Climb, Eliyakande Hill Climb, Vace Park Hill Climb,
St. James Hill Climb, Karundapona Hill Climb, Arena Supercross at
Embilipitiya, Talduwa races, Road races in Kandy, Koggala, Mihintale and
Nuwara Eliya and a number of races at the Pannala International racing
track. A high point of his career was when he covered the Japanese GT
motor races at the Sepbang circuit in Malaysia in 2001 in which Sri
Lanka's racing ace Dilantha Malagamuwa participated.
When the Victoria golf course was opened at Rajawella in 1998, he was
quick to take to coverage of that sport too. He has covered the SAARC
Golf Championship, SriLankan Golf Classics, SriLankan Golf Festival and
other golf championships organised at Victoria. In short he has
experience in covering every sport played in the hill capital from
school to club level, a record worthy of mention.
