Mercantile Hockey Sevens Oct 5th

HOCKEY: The 32nd annual Mercantile Hockey Association Seven-a-Side Hockey Tournament will be played on October 5 from 8 a.m. onwards at the Saravanamuttu Stadium, Colombo Oval.

Browns PLC will be sponsoring the tournament for the second consecutive year.

The chief guests will be Mr. Murali Prakash - Managing Director/CEO of Browns Group of Companies and the guests of honour will be Mr. Prakash Schafter - Managing Director Janashakthi Insurance Company Limited and Mrs. Sumi Schafter.

Teams will participate in five separate divisions.

'A' Division: Dennis de Rosayro Trophy (donatd by Janashakthi Insurance Company Limited) - Commercial Bank, Hatton National Bank 'A', Singers, Sampath Bank, Seylan Bank and Hatton National Bank 'B'.

Runners-up will receive Mercantile H.A. Trophy donated by a well-wisher.

'A' Division: Dennis de Rosayro Fair Play Trophy will be contested by only 'A' Division teams.

'B' Division: Singer Trophy - Browns Group, Hong Kng Bank, John Keells Group.

'C' Division: Lifebuoy Trophy - Dialog, Arpico, Commercial Bank 'B', SriLankan Airlines, Uni-Levers.

'D' Division: Edmond H. Cooray Trophy - AWD Group, Airport and Aviation, Bartleets Group and Janashakthi Group.

'E' Division: Ceylon Cold Stores Trophy - Glaxo Smithline, M.J.F. Group, Hilton Colombo.

Last year, the following teams emerged champions: "'A' Division: Commercial Bank 'A'; 'B' Division: Browns Group; 'C'; HSBC, "D", Commercial Bank "B", "E" Division: MJF Group, "A" Division: Dennsi de Rosayro Trophy - Commercial Bank.

The Mercantile Hockey Association will also award hockey sticks to the outstanding player in all five divisions.

The Mercantile Hockey Association will also present cash awards of Rs. 7,500, 6,000, Rs. 5,000, Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 5,000 to the winners from 'A' to 'E' Division respectively in addition to the replicas.

A special merit plaque will be presented to Chandra T.S. Schafter for his outstanding contribution made for hockey, as player, manager and administrator to Mercantile, Ceylon/Sri Lanka.
