'Dear Sweetheart'
'I don't think that ever before I've realised just how much I miss
you.
Nothing is right or in its proper perspective when I am by myself.
With you here with me this place, or any place, would be heaven. Without
you nothing really matters very much. No one can live without love and
love, for me, means you. This leave has been an appalling one in some
ways and if I've ever been lonely before it wasn't a patch on this. So
much so that I'm not fussy about going on leave again. As long as I'm
kept reasonably busy I can, after a fashion, smother the aching void
that occupies the spot my heart used to be in. Because my heart is a
great distance away - with you.
That is the main reason that I want to get into action of some sort,
or at least be with the unit. Because then I would feel that in some way
I was shortening the gap between us and also would be so extremely busy
that I wouldn't have time to feel lonely. Not that I would stop missing
you. That is with me always and particularly at night. You are so much a
part of me that like an arm or a hand missing - I'll never get over not
having you to snuggle down beside me.
Need I say more - words simply can't express what I feel and all I
really want to say is in three small simple words. I love you.
I'll write again to try to tell you something of what this place is
like but right now all I want to say to you is I love you. So for the
present - goodnight and sweet dreams. If they'd only be true - even for
a few minutes.
