Charismatic Chitral

Michael, Pierre and Chitral
|
He has made a quantum leap forward in his singing career you will
agree, if you caught the vibes of his track 'Dream On' aired on radio
these days. Charismatic Chitral Somapala has come a long way since we
last saw him on our stages singing rock nuggets with sheer commitment
and energy. Hailing from a family that is steeped in music, his parents
were the icons in Sinhala song P. L. A. Somapala and Chitra, and
undoubtedly, were they were living, they would have been proud of
Chitral's success in the rock scene in Germany. But humble as he is
Chitty, as he is fondly called, says that he and his group Civilization
One need to go further along the road and they are working at it.
The group comprises apart from Chitral, bassist Pierre Pelisson,
drummer Michael Stein and guitarist Kai Muhlen Bruch.
"We've been doing many concert shows in Germany to promote our album
'Revolution Rising' and the response has been great. Our music can be
categorised as melodic hard rock. Here in Sri Lanka we were pretty
amazed to see such a large gathering to hear us perform. There were the
youth audience as well as the adult audience their response was great
and I must say that the show TNL On Stage was professionally organised.
"Most importantly the sound was good and the group felt happy
playing" says Chitral when we caught up with him for the usual musicians
pow wow.
When the members are not actively rehearsing and composing they are
busy teaching music to many young music minded aspiring to be rock
stars.
"I teach the bass and most of the young students have a passion for
studying the rock bass which is a good sign," comments Pierre Pelisson
who went on to say that before their album was released "we had a show
at Cheltenham, London. That was our first show outside Germany and the
response we got was good." Pierre runs a music studio as well. The
drummer Michael Stein is a drum instructor teaching young students
during the day. "This is the first time for us in Sri Lanka and we are
happy that we were invited to perform here. The response was a pleasant
surprise. I had to answer a lot of questions about drumming. It was
interesting" expressed Michael.
Unfortunately we were unable to rapport with the guitarist Kai Muhlen
Bruch as he was indisposed but according to Chitty he was also on the
same wavelength "that the response from the Sri Lankan audience was
good."
All members were of the opinion that they want to come back for
another performance after their next record is released.
"We've already started on our next album and we are hoping to name it
"Calling the Gods" says Chitty with that engaging smile of his.
Any advice to our youth?
"What we heard that day at the competition was good - you have to
work hard at the same time when you achieve success don't let it go to
your head!"
