The Department for Registration of Persons will issue a new National
Identity Card with computer printed data to Sri Lankans from next year.
The programme is in keeping with the Mahinda Chinthana concept of
introducing modern technology to all Government Departments to ensure an
efficient and fruitful service to the public.
This scheme is implemented under the personal supervision of
Commissioner General A.G. Dharmadasa on the instructions of Prime
Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka who is also Minister of Internal
Administration.
The Card will have a chip with all relevant details of the person.
The Department will issue the new identity card to those born after
January 1, 1991 under the first step of the project. The program will
commence next month. The Identity Card will be issued to those who were
born before January 1, 1991 from mid next year.
The International Centre for Technology Assessment will help to issue
the card.
