Fresh water fish breeding industry to be developed

The fresh water fish breeding industry will be developed islandwide under the quality improvement project of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.

The Ministry will select fresh water fish breeders from the districts of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Ampara, Kurunegala, Badulla, Trincomalee and Gampaha. Those selected will be sent abroad for training.

The training course will be held at the "Bubar theswar" Institute in Orissa State, India. The ten-day program will include training in breeding fresh water fish, breeding in ponds, fish harvesting and marketing. Twenty one fresh water fish breeders were sent to India for training and the program will be continued", Ministry sources said. The cost of the training program will be borne by the Ministry.
