VRHC celebrates tenth anniversary
Vindana Reproductive Health Centre (VRHC), Colombo 7 whose noble
mission is to help out childless couples to make a family of their own
celebrated its 10th anniversary recently, announcing its successful
deliverance of over 100 babies through In- Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
methods by a totally Sri Lankan team of specialists.
The Centre was started in 1998, at a time the facilities for treating
infertility were at a very low level.
As VRHC states the need was enhanced because of the reduction in
fertility rates and the population growth. Understanding the dire need,
Professor Harsha Seneviratna and his team invested their own money and
established the centre with the assistance of prof. A. Bongso, an
eminent Sri Lankan doctor specializing in reproductive health,
practicing in Singapore.
Today VHRC has reached rate of 40% through IVF births, which is much
higher than the average global rate of 30-35%.
The centre has also introduced many new advanced facilities for
Assisted Reproduction such as Freezing facility, Testicular sperm
aspiration (TESA), Donor egg facility, sperm storage facility, quality
enhancement, training facility for ART. Also the couples who seek
assistance from centres abroad can now obtain necessary treatments from
VRHC more conveniently and at a lesser cost.
In recognition of its service, the centre received the National
Science and Technology award for the year 2005, by the Ministry of
Science and Technology. |
