Lanka’s business future looks good - Maldivian President
by Nilma DOLE
Sri Lanka has fared better than other countries despite having a
civil war for more than 20 years, said President of the Republic of
Maldives Mohammed Nasheed, addressing the business community yesterday.
“I myself see a good future for Sri Lanka and appeal to potential Sri
Lankan investors to venture into Maldives” he said. Commenting further,
the Maldivian President said that there is a positive scope for
profit-making and to diversify into areas such as transport;
electrification and waste management.
“Even though Maldives has been traditionally a hotspot for tourism
and a thriving fisheries industry, I see many would realise that there
is immense potential to tap into other areas”, he said.
“I’m glad that Sri Lankan investors have already seen the potential
in Maldives and I would like to see many others joining”, said the
President. He guaranteed that under his jurisdiction, Maldives will be a
country free of corruption minus the red tape that is needed to get
things done.
“We are implementing laws that will assure the business community
that Maldives has a safe and profitable environment” he said. With the
new government, ministries like health, education and environment are
keen on building partnerships with Sri Lankan investors to have
bilateral trade relations.
