Over 5,000 idling buses to be repaired

In keeping with the pledge made by the Government to increase the passenger bus fleet, Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma last week took a firm decision to repair over 5,000 idling buses, currently lying at Ceylon Transport Board (CTB) depot yards countrywide.

The Minister said importing new buses will be stopped until further notice.Alahapperuma said three un used buses in depot yards could be turned into its earlier condition from the money spent to import a bus.

He said he was compelled to take a decision to repair old buses following several visits he made to certain depots in the recent past.

The Minister also expressed his disappointment over the non use of many buses due to the negligence of officials.
