Mahela and Thilan `broke' 52-year-old record of England's Peter May
and Colin Cowdrey!
By Ranjan ANANDAPPA

The record-breaking partnership.... Colin Cowdrey (154) on left
and Peter May (285 n.o.) walk back to the pavilion after their
record breaking 411 run partnership for the 4th wicket during
the 1st cricket Test between England and the West Indies played
in Edgsbaston, Birmingham in 1957. Sri Lankan pair Mahela
Jayawardene (240) and Thilan Samaraweera (231) broke the
existing record after 52 years with a partnership of 437 runs
for the fourth wicket in the 1st Test against Pakistan in
Karachi.

CRICKET: Could one believe of a bowler, bowling 98 overs in a single
inning in a Test match?
Yes! It's hard to believe but it is true. One time West Indian
mystery spinner Sonny Ramadhin bowled 98 overs 35 of which them were
maidens and took 2 wickets for 179 in the 2nd innings in the 1st Test
between England and the West Indies played at Edgbaston, Birmingham,
England in 1957.
England, batting first, were shot out for 186 with Ramadhin, proving
unplayable taking 7 for 49 in 31 overs. Only opener Peter Richardson
(47) and Peter May (30) made worthwhile contributions. Ramadhin bowled
129 overs in that Test match.
The West Indies propelled by their top order batsmen Clyde Walcott
(90), Rohan Kanhai 42), Garfield Sobers (53) Collie Smith (161) and
Frank Worrell (81) amassed 474 in their first Innings.
England batting for the second time with a deficit of 288 runs were
heading towards disaster, losing 3 for 113. But May and Cowdrey dug
themselves in to produce that record breaking 4th wicket stand of 411.
England finally closed their 2nd Innings at 583 for 4 with May 285 not
out and Cowdrey 154.
England nearly pulled off the match in their favour, capturing 7 of
the Windies wickets for 72 runs, the second innings when they needed 295
runs to win.
Trueman 2 for 7, Laker 2 for 13 and Lock 3 for 31 shared the wickets.
Incidentally this was the Test that Peter May and Colin Cowdrey were
engaged in a record breaking partnership for the 4th wicket (411) which
Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera broke recently in Pakistan in
the 1st Test after 52 long years at the National Stadium, Karachi.
The Lankan pair added 434 runs for the 3rd wicket. Sri Lanka skipper
Mahela Jayawardene and his deputy Kumar Sangakkara hold the current
record partnership for any wicket - 624 against South Africa in July
2006 at the Singhalese Sports Club grounds.
