Rains come down during Tooth Relic exposition
by Jiffrey ABDEEN, Kandy South Group Corr.
Heavy showers fell in Kandy city as large crowds thronged to see the
exposition of Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy on
Friday afternoon.
This was the first day of the exposition of the Relic and the people
clad in white lined up along the queues from the previous day. By Friday
morning the queues along D. S. Senanayake Road had extended up to the
end of the road which was little less than a kilometre.
The other from the Dalada Maligawa extended along Sangaraja Mawatha
upto Mahamaya Girls College along the Kandy Lake which was nearly a
kilometre long.
The age old belief that when there is exposition of the Relic, there
will be rain, once again came true when the exposition was on, there was
welcome showers.
British Administrator John D’oyly who was the First Resident and
First Commissioner of the Board formed in 1815, to administer the
affairs of the Kandyan Kingdom after the capture of the last King of
Kandy has recorded in his book published in 1846 that there is a belief
among the subjects that whenever there is an exposition of the Tooth
Relic there is rain, even during a drought. This belief was proved
beyond doubt by Friday afternoon’s showers.
Kandy police headed by DIG Central Province, Pujitha Jayasundera
maintained tight security with random checks carried on vehicles
entering the Kandy city. The exposition ends on March 16.
