Reaching out

How long can I extend my hand as I've done so far,
To help others in their time of need?
Much have I sacrificed without a tear,
Naught do I grieve even in thought.
"Give and thou shall receive", said thy Lord.
What have I received from them all?
Insufferable hurt and pain.
Rejoice only in the giving and expect only the smile from a consoled,
Happy heart, relieved from its distress and anxiety.
"Thank you", sometimes they say and I?
I thank them in turn for that moment of joy they imprint in my heart,
And imprinted it shall stay like on stone, which is my heart's burden.

Krishanthi Anandawansa

Fate

When I think about the past,
I feel happy
B'cause you taught me
How to share with people
How to face difficulties
How to bare severe pains
By giving me a strong heart
To stand straight

About my fate, it's not such
Already you may know,
how my friends and my own
Deserted me.
Although I cannot see you,
I know, I feel,
You are still close to me.

Ring is round, it has no end
So it our love.
Bloom with jasmine fragrance
In my heart forever.

Sakunthala Malathi Munasinghe.

Sob

A sob is trapped
within me. It flutters
Feebly, beating
Aimless wings
Against the cool
Surface of my soul

Now it taps
Its blunted beak against
The white-rock bars
Of its cage-and
My chest vibrates dully.

I clip its wings
Now it hops
Jerkily,
Flutters halfway up
My chest in a strange
Smothered half-gasp,
Half-sigh

I hold my breath
Gulp down sugar and
Water, and,
For some time
Its muffled pleas for
Freedom die.

I waited beneath the tall Mango tree...

I waited beneath the tall Mango tree,
And with hope my heart was all fraught,
And wiped away the sweat gathered on my face,
With a handkerchief so beautifully wrought.

With the zephyr stroking my sweat-soaked face,
I felt my cheeks grow cool;
A lovely butterfly, I saw, alight on a yellow rose,
Over which it began to drool.

The fount in the garden continued to shoot,
Jet after jet of the purest water;
Jabbering near it were a happy family of babblers,
Father and mother with their youngest daughter.

Beside the little pond, the Sal tree was in bloom,
Its fragrance now pervaded the air;
A couple of squirrels, I watched, frolic aloft it,
As I stood waiting there.

Swaying in the wind, the mango leaves rustled,
Whispering secrets to me;
But seeing you come up, all else
I forgot,
And my heart filled with glee!

You are my brothers under the Sun

Mother Lanka who bears you
Always beamed
When you stepped forward
Bravely through enemy lines.

The soil beneath your boot
Always sought
Your sweat drops down
To enrich the nature.

I saluted
Your lifeless iron riffle
Who swept your loneliness
Always being next to heart.

I bowed my crown Because
You had to put your life in danger
For the sake of ours.

Hence My heart will never forget
That You are my brother
My brother Under the sun.

Aruna Nilaweera.
