Popular
teledrama actress, Tharushi Suramya Perera says that newcomers to the
field, are more keen on striving for instant popularity than
establishing themselves through hard work and perseverance.
In a brief interview with `Panorama’, the actress who is
affectionately known as Tharushi said that she has come across several
budding actors and actresses who have entered the arena, seeking
overnight success.
Tharushi who has acted in over 20 teledramas, mostly in mega-tele
serial `Kawya’ currently being screened during prime time, stated that
there was no recipe for quick success, and as in life, if any actor or
actress is to achieve lasting stardom, then they need to dedicate their
craft allowing their inborn talents to take them places.
“I have seen many newcomers in the field of teledrama acting who have
achieved popularity overnight, only to fade away within days”, she
pointed out. “They have even inquired from me as to how I’ve managed to
sustain my popularity, and what I’ve told them is that popularity alone
cannot guarantee a permanent place in a competitive field as acting.
“You need to have inborn talents to go along with your popularity, if
you are to remain etched in the memory of your fans for a long time.”
Tharushi Suramya, who has starred in teledramas such as `Mage Kaviya
Mata Denna’. `Pooja’, `Man Hinda’,`Mayumi’, `Wanabime Sirakaru’ and the
on-going drama `Ridee Ittankaraya’ to name a few, was of the view that
the current trend towards mega teledramas was not healthy, but and that
more and more artistes have become attracted to it due to financial
benefits.
She stressed that by the time she joined the cast of `Kawya’, it was
not specifically categorised as a mega teledrama, but had a long-
running tele-series in the form of a mega drama due to its complex
story-line.
The actress who enjoys reading, watching movies and writing
screenplays in her spare time, said that despite being involved in mega
tele films as `Kawya’, Indian styled, and a few local ones as `Hansi’, `Hima
Kandulu’, `Pathini’ and a few others, she always strived to maintain her
own identity.
Hailing
from the cool climes of Nawalapitiya, in the Kandy District and from a
family of two younger sisters and a younger brother, Tharushi Suramya
the charming actress observed that she has been `lucky’ to have
portrayed contrasting characters instead of being typecast by any
director, during the short time she has spent in the field, and declared
that her ardent fans would continue to see her taking a wide variety of
roles in the future.
Asked for her opinion on the future of the industry, and her own
goals to be accomplished she explained that the industry had become
ultra-competitive due to a plethora of dramas being screened on all
seven days of the week over some 13 to 14 channels, hence the quality of
some had suffered as a result.
She added that her intention is to always give something valuable and
meaningful to the viewers and that she would not hesitate to shun
productions of inferior quality even if the money offered is lucrative.
Tharushi Suramya, also expressed a desire to make her mark one day in
the celluloid world if given an opportunity to do a constructive role
and mentioned that due to various reasons she has had to forgo a few
movies in the recent past.
She also credited one of her relatives for being instrumental in her
taking to the field of teledrama acting along with veteran actor cum
director Jayalath Manorathna, award-winning actor Sriyantha Mendis and
popular actress Duleeka Marapana, her parents and many other directors
for helping her throughout her showbiz career so far.
