Canines

Companions and protectors

Many of you must be having various breeds of dogs as your pets. Some of you must be enjoying a very close relationship with your pets, especially with dogs, and treating them like 'family members.'

Of all the domesticated pets we have, the dog is very popular. It has an almost universal appeal to the members of the human family regardless of geographical location, age and social status.

Dogs are known for their affection and loyalty and are considered 'man's best friend.' A protective nature of a dog towards its master or mistress is part of its very fibre; your pet dog will be ample proof of this fact.

There are many stories of how canines or doggie friends have even risked their own lives to protect their owners from danger and harm. History records many instances where dogs have stayed by man's side, turning a blind eye to all danger, and done whatever they can, to help him or her.

Apart from protecting the owners, the role of guardian of the premises is one the dog assumes naturally.

It is not surprising as this is something the dog has been used to doing, since the time man first domesticated the wild dog. The dog has served as the protector of the hearth since the cave-man era.

You may be pleasantly surprised to learn that a mute (silent) testimony to this fact had been found in the ruins of Pompeii which was destroyed when the Vesuvius volcano erupted on August 24, AD 79. In the doorway of an excavated home, archaeologists had found a figure of a dog in mosaic with the inscription: Care Canen (Beware of the dog).

It is certainly amazing that even after more than two thousand years, we humans still rely on the dog's faithfulness and protective instinct, despite all the modern developments. What's more, we still use the same words 'beware of dog' to warn strangers who enter our premises.

Whether big or small, all dogs are equally committed to their task of protecting their owners and their property. So, take good care of your beloved canine friends who do so much for you, asking very little in return; just your affection!

Some interesting facts

* Long before there are any detectable visual, aural, olfactory or other accepted sensory stimuli (rousing) some dogs have the ability to sense when their owner is coming home.

* Many researchers claim that most animals do have some psychic powers to sense danger long before it happens and we are fools to ignore them.

* Pets can help reduce high blood pressure, depression and several other debilitating (weakening) conditions, according to scientists.

* Some pets have been known to sense impending epileptic seizures or diabetic comas in their owners, often long before the latter is even aware of them.

Many researchers claim that dogs can also help detect cancers. There have been reports of cancers being detected in some after their pet dogs have been compulsory sniffing at a particular area.

Protect your pets during Avurudu

It is a very common practice during any festive season to light firecrackers. As children, you'll be so excited to light them and completely forget to protect your pets from running away out of fear. Most animals are afraid of the sound of crackers, so ensure your pets are properly taken care of before people start lighting crackers at the auspicious times. Otherwise they may even get injured by the firecrackers or go missing.
