The good news for after-dark groovers is that their favourite live
band Aquarius will continue their gigs at the Margarite Blue, Galadari
Hotel till May draws to a close. Benjy the bassist leader of the band
relayed the news to us that his band will continue to keep his fans
happy, and that he has enhanced the overall sound of his band with the
introduction of a sax sound.
“Mano the sax player has been performing
with Derek Wickramanayake and Wild Fire and now that he is with us the
sound of Aquarius has acquired a new thrust and a new repertoire that
keeps the dancers on the floor for longer hours.
What is more Mano is a
multi-instrumentalist ‘cos besides playing the sax he plays keyboards,
is a versatile guitarist and sings as well. So in a band like ours that
is a great advantage” voices Benjy putting his band through the
rehearsal paces.
Of course as you can see in the picture the female glitz Apple and
Ice are fascinating singers who came across from Doha to join Aquarius
in Colombo, and with their wide repertoire of `now’ music they have
gathered a fan base which is quite staggering! The mainstays in this
versatile band are the drummer Shiran who not only holds the reins on
the band with his exciting skin and cymbals talk but handles vocals as
well. Ray the keyboardist’s artistry is displayed on the black and white
keys and also in his vocal stylings. Then of course guitarist
Dhanushka’s fretwork and vocals switches the band to a high. The
interaction with the other musicians has given a special overall sound
that is now typically Aquarius.
“We won’t be functioning at the Margarita during the Avurudu season
from the 8th to 11th but we will be back on April 16 to play our regular
dates for the week that’s on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
There’s possibility that we’ll be featured at H2O on Wednesdays, but
till then we welcome our fans to be with us on April 16”, concludes
Benjy. Be sure you make the date.
