Great team effort gets Army first three places

CYCLING: It was a great team victory when the first three places in
the 100 Km Racing Event at the annual Inter- Regiment Cycle Race went to
the riders from the SLEME. The races were held at the Viharamahadevi
Park Circuit.
Sanath Jayasinghe came first with Luxman Wijeratne taking second
place while U. D. Prabath came in third.
All the cyclists who achieved a high performance in this event will
be recommended for the Army team to participate in national events.
The SLEME (Sri Lanka Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) headed by
CFN Luxman Wijeratne won the overall Army Challenge Trophy for 2009. The
runners-up were Sri Lanka Army Work Services headed by Army's champion
cyclist and South Asian Games Hold Medallist C. P. Meemanage.
The Inter-Services cycle race was held on November 7 and 8 on the
route Colombo - Puttlam and Puttlam - Colombo, a distance covering 256
km. The Army won the event and several other places in between the first
ten. It showed that the Army team is in a strong position. All forces -
Army, Navy, Air Force teams participated including the Police team.
In the recent selection of the SAG Pool, 4 Army cyclists, 2 each from
Air Force and Navy and one cyclist from Police were selected.
Amateur Standard cycles (50 km) - 64 cyclists faced starter: 1. CFN -
Gayan Kumara (SLEME), 2. Pvt. Jayamal (CSC), 3. CFN Rajapaksha (SLEME).
100 km Racing Event (All Regiments - 40 laps (64 Racing Cyclists
faced starter: 1. CFN Sanath Jayasinghe (SLEME), 2. CFN Luxman Wijeratne
(SLEME), 3. CFN U. D. Prabath (SLEME).
10 km Veterans (Ex-Servicemen) - over 45 laps: 1. Ex-Serviceman W. R.
Jayalath of Ambalangoda. 2. W. A. Silva from Kottawa, 3. P. Anthony
Symond (66 years).
