Rajans to concentrate on Rugby Football
by Upananda JAYASUNDERA - Kandy Sports Special Corr.
RUGBY: Dharmaraja College is keen on improving the standard of rugby
football in the college. Old Rajans have formed a Rugby Football
Association - that was in 1997 and Aruna Kalinga who captained the
school team in 1994, was the first President of Old Rajans when the Old
Rajans Rugby Football Association was inaugurated in 1997. It is the
intention of the Old Rajans to help the school in rugby football. Rajans
rugby captain Nishantha Ettipola represented National Schools Rugby Team
this year. Dharmaraja has been playing rugby since 1970.
Major General Gamini Jayasundera was the first captain and D. D. P.
Alwis - an old Rajan who was a member of the Sri Lanka Air Force was
their first rugby coach. Down the years Dharmaraja has produced National
Players like Upali Ekanayake, Muruga Jayaratna, Hemantha Yatawara,
Ajantha Samarakoon, Indrajith Bandaranayake, Radika Hettiarachchi,
Ravindra Wekadapola, C. S. Fernando, Daya Jayasundera and S. U. Mendis
to name a few.
