CRICKET: Mahara President's College registered a 87-run victory over
Pattalagedera Vidyaloka Vidyalaya in their schools under-13 tournament
match played at Mahara grounds. Buddhika Chamara hit a fluent century
(102) for the winners while Himal Pankaja had match haul of 10 wickets
for 20 runs:
Mahara President's College: 234 (B. Chamara 102, N. Dilhara 38, P.
Godahewa 30, D.D. Senaviratne 4 for 63, J.H. Hapuarachchi 2 for 28).
Vidyaloka Vidyalaya: 120 (J.H. Hapuarachchi 59, D.D. Senaviratne 18,
H. Pankaja 5 for 13, C.V. Godahewa 2 for 25) and 27 H.P.H. Pankaja 5 for
7, B. Chamara 5 for 4).
Royalist Karunaratne shoots his way to national honours
RIFELE SHOOTING: A student of Royal College, Colombo, Kasun
Karunaratne won the men's junior air rifle gold medal at the National
Shooting Championships 2009 concluded this month at the Army Electronic
Range, Panagoda. Kasun Karunaratne, 18, accrued 552 points out of 600 in
the 10m Air Rifle event to emerge the junior national champion while
representing the Negombo Rifle Club.Following his success at the
national championships organised by the National Sports Shooting
Federation, Kasun is qualified to be considered to represent Sri Lanka
at the Asian Air Gun Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Vidura College U-12 'D' Div. Badminton Champs
BADMINTON: Vidura College, Nawala won the All-Island Under-12 Girls
Badminton 'D' Division team championships and thereby annexed the Ananda
Alahakoon Memorial Challenge Trophy.In the final, Vidura College beat
Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya, Kurunegala by 2 sets to 1, the scores were:
21-15, 21-17 and 18-21.In the semi-finals, Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya
beat Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Kottawa 21-7, 21-10 and 10-21. In the second
semi-final Vidura College beat Karandeniya Central College 21-12, 21-15
and 16-21.
Three meet records on final day
Three new meet records were set up on the final day of the Defence
Services Athletic Championship which concluded at the Sugathadasa
Stadium yesterday.
N.C.D. Priyadarshani (Sri Lanka Navy) set a new record for the long
jump women's event with a leap 6.11 meters to improve on her own record
5.76 meters set in 2005.
The second record was established by K.K.K. Senarathne (Sri Lanka
Navy) in the 400m men's event with a time of 46.98 secs. The earlier too
was held by Sailor W.R.K. Wimalawansa (Sri Lanka Navy) in 2001, clocking
47.12secs.
The third recorded by Janaka Appuhami (Sri Lanka Navy) in the triple
jump men's event with a leap of 16.05 meters. The older too was held by
K.A. Gayan Malika (Sri Lanka Army) in 2003, leap of 15.90 meters.
Rain spoils both semi-finals
CRICKET: Tamil Union and Chilaw Marians SC set up a final showdown
after their SLC Premier limited overs cricket tournament Tier 'A'
semi-final matches ended in a no decision due to bad weather in Colombo
yesterday.
Tamil Union were up against the SSC at Maitland Place and Chilaw
Marians SC were scheduled to meet Colts CC at the P. Saravanamuttu Oval
but both matches were abandoned without a ball been bowled.
As a result Tamil Union and Chilaw Marians SC who had notched up more
victories than their opponents during the preliminary round tournament
qualified to play in the final encounter which will be worked off later.
In fact the final was earlier scheduled for today at the SSC grounds in
Maitland Place but was postponed indefinitely due to the present weather
conditions. Meanwhile the second semifinal of the SLC Premier limited
overs Tier 'B' cricket tournament between Seeduwa, Raddoluwa CC and
Sebastianites SC was also washed out die to heavy rain at Braybrooke

Deelaka shines for Cambrians

A fine allround performance from Kisal Deelaka 8 for 21 and 40 runs
enabled Prince of Wales `College, Moratuwa beat St. Thomas College,
Matara by 64 runs in their inter school under 13 Division one second
round match worked off at Moratuwa.
Thomians batting first were bundled out for 65 runs and the Cambrians
declared at 129 for 8 and in their second essay visitors were 6 for 1
when rain stopped play.
Chief scores.
STC - 65 in 25.2 overs - (Thushan Sampath 20, Kisal Deelaka 8/21) and
6 for 1.
PWC - 129/8 dec - 44.4 overs - (Hashan Madushanka 24, Kisal Deelaka
40, Kushan Rangana 2/28.
Biggest prize money for shuttlers

The Sinhalese Sports Club has offered, probably the biggest prize
money for the winners of their annual Open Badminton Championship (Rs.
400,000) when it gets under way from December 6 to 13 at their courts
which has built to International status.
The championship will be conducted with the participation of top
players of the country and will no doubt attract top shuttlers from all
over the island.
Last year too, a similar sum of prize money was offered to enhance
the players. This was possible due to the sponsorship of Hatton National
Bank, HNB Assurance, Fonterra Brands Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. and Dialog
Telecom. Trophies and certificates will also be presented to all winners
while the runners up will be rewarded with prize money and certificates.
Twenty nine events are scheduled to be worked out in this eight day
tourney and the finals will take place on December 13 from 8.30 a.m.
onwards followed by the awards ceremony. The events are men and women
open singles and doubles. Open mixed doubles, singles and doubles for
boys and girls of age groups under-13, 15, 17 and 19. Singles for boys
and girls of the age group under-11, veterans women's over 35 singles
and doubles, veterans men's singles and doubles of the age groups over
40 and 50.
Date and time for closing of applications have been extended to 5.00
p.m. on Friday, November 27, 2009. |
