O Serene! O Free
Touch them with thy right hand
Make them one into their life
Bring rhythm of beauty...
O Serene! O Free
In thy immeasurable mercy and goodness
Wipe away all dark stains from the heart of this earth...
Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophy is the inspiration for Marie Alles
Fernando’s exhibition of paintings entitled “Peace - The 2009
Collection,” which will be held from December 18-20 at the Harold Pieris
Gallery, Lionel Wendt from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. each day. Marie Alles after
a short hiatus has decided to display her collection which will be
looked forward to by those who appreciate her style of expression. “I am
exhibiting about twenty oil paintings and a miscellaneous 20 other
exhibits which include pastel, paper and some oil painting.
And this exhibition is my tribute to all those people who over the
dark years suffered hardships and have lived through it without deciding
to leave the country. They are the survivors and from here onwards we
the survivors have to work harder to extend peace to everybody young or
old. I remember in 1971 my husband was working in Madulsima the
insurrection cut off any contact with my parents.
The anxiety as to what was happening to them was nerve racking. In
1983 and 1989 there were many who suffered the tension. In my small way
I worked for Peace. In 1986 I had my solo exhibition for peace at the
prestigious Ring Gallery in Vienna, Austria, under the patronage of the
UN and sponsored by AirLanka. I followed up the theme of peace with an
article I wrote and published called “Peace begins in the minds of men.”
So this Peace - the 2009 Collection with many Sri Lankan themes of
peaceful landscapes is my tribute to those who underwent many hardships
with the hope that the light at the end of the tunnel will shine
brightly on them.”
