Pipe-borne water for Giddawa

The 675 families living in the village of Giddawa, Teldeniya no longer need to travel back and forth over long distances for water with the inauguration of a pipe-borne water supply, said Chief Minister of the Central Province, Sarath Ekanayake.

He made these observations after inaugurating the pipe-borne water scheme for Giddawa.He said the people of Giddawa suffered for years without water in their homes. They had to depend on springs and spouts for their daily needs and in times of drought, they went through many hardships. Now they will have water in their houses, saving them time and trouble.


JICA A.A. X ' mas party

The JICA Alumni Association of Sri Lanka will host a Christmas Party for the children and grandchildren of its members on December 19th commencing 4.30 p.m. at the Auditorium of the Sasakawa Memorial Cultural Centre, Colombo 3.


Illicit abattoirs raided

Two men who ran an illicit cattle slaughterhouse in the Talduwa area were produced before the Ruwanwella Magistrate and fined Rs. 25,000 each, according to police.The Central Anti Vice Striking Force (CAVSF) following a tip-off last week raided the two illicit abattoirs at Talduwa in the Avissawella area, and arrested the two suspect butchers. The slaughterhouses were located in two luxury houses at Talduwa Riverside Road and at Panagalamulla in the Kadagahawatte area.

The luxury houses were owned by the two butchers.

When police stormed the houses they found the carcasses of two slaughtered buffalo and another buffalo about to be slaughtered. The raid was conducted by OIC CAVSF, Inspector Duminda Balasooriya under the directions of Director CAVSF, SP D.R.L. Ranaweera.


10th anniversary of NIFNE

The National Institute of Fisheries and Nautical Engineering (NIFNE), also known as Sagara Vishwa Vidyalaya, will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a 'Pirith' chanting on December 17 and an alms-giving on the following day. The events will take place at NIFNE's Mattakkuliya premises.In early 2010, the institute will conduct an exhibition and a ceremony on the theme 'Building a glorious and prosperous Sri Lanka through capacity enhancement in ocean sciences'.
