Director General, of TRCSL, Priyantha Kariyapperuma said the project
upon completion will be a national icon that would attract more foreign
investments and visitors to the country.
“Reducing construction and ensuring efficiency of services is a key
component in the growth of the telecommunication industry”, he said.
Kariyapperuma was speaking at the launching ceremony last week of the
Sri Lanka Space Agency (SLASA) at the TRCSL as a move to enter into the
world of satellite communication.
Satellite capability will be acquired from Surrey satellite which is
based at the University of Surrey, UK. SLASA plans to collaborate with
NASA of USA, JAXA of Japan and ISRO of India and many other space
agencies throughout the world.
“The launch of satellite communication will enhance the development
of many sectors and boost the confidence of investors”, Kariyapperuma
said.
He said the private sector which is the driving force of the
telecommunication industry can invest in satellites and increase
broadcasting, provide high speed internet and mobile satellite
communication.
The TRCSL plans to commence construction of the Kokavil tower by end
of next month at a cost of Rs. 200 million. The tower is 172 meters
high. A 60-meter tower to link the Kokavil tower will be constructed at
Madukande next year.
The government has raised credit from the International Development
Association to fund the e-Sri Lanka project which will commence in the
first quarter of next year.
The TRCSL will host the 50th Commonwealth Telecommunication
Organisation (CTO) council meeting next year and the International
Telecommunication Organisation (ITO) Global Symposium in 2011.
“Despite the war and the global economic crisis the industry
performed well during the past five years”, the Director General said.
